Scope and Contents

This record group contains materials related to the alumni of Ethical Culture Fieldston Schools. This includes records of the Alumni Association, internal alumni-relations programs, and the Director of Alumni Affairs, as well as materials on the work and lives of former students. Archival materials donated by alumni are also found here.

Correspondence, meeting materials, news clippings, and ephemera make up most of the record group, along with some photographs and examples of student work. Records date from the 1890s through the 2010s, but the majority of items were created between 1970 and 2010.

Additional alumni fund-raising and alumni-relations records can be found in Record Group 9, Development and Communications and in files of the administration in Record Group 1. Copies of alumni directories and other ephemera can be found in Record Group 11, Printed matter.

Scope and Contents

This series contains records from the Alumni Association, an alumni-led group. Meeting materials for the Association and the Alumni Executive Board make up much of the series, which also contains ephemera, lists of officers and members, and correspondence. Frequent topics include reunions and other social functions, fund-raising, and the relationship of the Alumni Association to the school.

Correspondence and related papers from the Alumni Association. Subject matter mostly involves membership, payment of dues, events (annual dinners, reunions, social dinners and dances), and coordination with the school and Ethical Culture Society. A large portion of correspondence is from the papers of Robert Eiserman, longtime secretary of the Association. This includes a small amount of correspondence with Felix Adler. Non-correspondence items include early copies of the Association's constitution, lists of members, membership applications, ephemera, and reports from the Association's Executive Committee or Treasurer. 1909 correspondence includes responses to an alumni questionnaire on the value of scholarships.

Series II contains records of the Ethical Culture Fieldston School's own work with alumni, through the Office of Alumni Affairs. Records were primarily created during the tenure of Director of Alumni Affairs Toby Himmel. Most of the material in this series relates to events (such as reunions, homecomings, and speaker series), alumni mentorship and diversity programs, and fund-raising. Records of the Office's work in establishing and maintaining a school archive, and tracking developments in the lives of alumni, are also found in this series.

Mabel Towne Burnham, long-time Ethical Culture School employee, served in roles including Director of the Summer Play School in the 1920s, and Registrar in the 1930s. The series primarily contains scrapbooks she made during her years at Ethical Culture, along with clippings and ephemera intended for or removed from scrapbooks. It also includes some personal items (such as a diary and account books), and notebooks and printed matter from Essex High School and the Salem Normal School. The bulk of materials were created between 1900 and 1945.
