Time Inc. hired him in 1959, and he held various writing and editor positions with Time through 1974, including launching the European edition. In 1976, he was promoted to Time Assistant Managing Editor then Time Executive Editor in 1978. From 1982 to 1983, the corporate editorial department selected him to serve a temporary assignment as Assistant Corporate Editor while continuing to hold his permanent position. After this temporary position, he served one year as Corporate Editor then two years as Time Managing Editor before his appointment as Editor-in-Chief in 1987.
