Biographical Note
Richard B. Stolley was the first managing editor of People when it was founded in 1974. In 1981, Stolley took part in a rotating corporate editorial position while remaining his regular role as People Managing Editor.
In 1982 Stolley became the managing editor of Life. By the summer of 1985, Stolley was working both as the Life Managing Editor and the managing editor of Magazine Development. By December 1985, he is also the managing editor of a new magazine in development called Picture Week. In his correspondence, Stolley describes Picture Week as a weekly black and white news and human interest picture magazine. Development stops by November 1986.
During the fall of 1987, Stolley became the Director of Special Projects, a corporate position. In 1989, Stolley was promoted to the position of Editorial Director. While working as Editorial Director, he served on the Corporate Contributions Committee. Stolley remained the Editorial Director until his retirement in 1993 when Henry Muller moved into this role.
After his retirement, Stolley took a position with Time Inc. as a senior editorial adviser and was still in this position as of 2017. Additionally, Stolley worked as an executive producer on the television program "Extra" from 1995 to 1996 and was named to the Hall of Fame of the American Society of Magazine Editors in 1996.

Correspondence and Memoranda begin during Stolley's first corporate editorial stint in 1981 and span throughout several editorial positions at Time Inc. until his official retirement in 1993.The correspondence and memoranda discuss story and magazine pitches, story and magazine evaluations, comparisons of magazines, comments on television appearances, book outlines, meetings negotiations, personnel issues, the status of projects, and joint projects with outside organizations.

These include the small amount of folders that were not correspondence or editorial director subject files contained within Stolley's records in the Time Inc. Archives. The files span from his first corporate editorial stint in 1981 through several editorial positions.
Records include correspondence regarding book deals, photography locations and rights, protest letters regarding an image of Debra Winger in Life, speeches, and news clippings. Items of interest include Leigh Weiner's photographs of John F. Kennedy speaking to and interacting with a group, possibly at Milwaukee High School during his campaign.

Scope and Contents Note
This series focuses primarily on Stolley's work as Editorial Director with a few records from his time as Director of Special Projects. Materials include evaluations of literary manuscripts, style guides, book proposals, lists of confidential stories, pitches for new magazine, lists of recipients of Time Inc. donations, handwritten notes related to guest lectures, newspaper and magazine clippings, conference and meeting schedules and agendas, speech transcripts, budget reports, lists of Time Inc. magazine staff members, and correspondence .The correspondence discusses editorial decisions, article topics, advertising campaigns, corporate initiatives related to donations and support for political issues, new projects, story rights, book proposals, personnel issues, conference participation, and the inclusion of new sections in already existing magazines.
Items of interest include Time Inc.'s attempts to have Nelson Mandela publish his memoirs with them, and a proposal from DC Comics for a collaboration on a comic about Mandela's life.
