Scope and Contents Note
Gaines's files document his work on the Time Inc. Educational Task Force. According to a memoranda from Gaines, Editor-in-Chief Norm Pearlstine requested that Gaines "[I]nvestigate the education market, recommend whether or not we should enter it in an important way and suggest, if so, how." Records include this memorandum; correspondence from education-related companies such as Leanna Landsmann Inc. and Pantecha; market studies and other research material; a draft of the Time-Life Education strategic planning analysis; a Time-Life Learning working draft; and an inventory of the Time Inc. Archives related to an exhibition.

Biographical Note
James R. Gaines is first noted as a department head in June 1979 when he is listed as a senior editor of People. He was promoted several times at before becoming the People Managing Editor in 1987. In 1989, Gaines left People to join Life as Managing Editor. After three years, Gaines left Life to become Time Managing Editor. While in this role, Gaines served on the Online Steering Committee Educational Task Force. By January 1996, Gaines was promoted to Corporate Editor of Time Inc., a position he held until January 1997.
