In the interview, Figueroa discusses his childhood in the Brownsville neighborhood of Brooklyn; impressions of racial tensions in Brownsville; experience dropping out of high school and joining a gang; impressions of jail and halfway houses; and work with at-risk youth. Biographical note

Joseph Figueroa was born to Puerto Rican parents and raised in Brooklyn, New York. Figueroa earned a high school diploma while incarcerated in prison. After his release, Figueroa worked for gang intervention organizations and lived in the Crown Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn.
