Scope and Contents Note
The N. J. Nicholas, Jr. files date from his time as chief financial officer, executive vice president of of video operations, and Time Inc. president and chief operating officer (COO) although it isn't clear in which capacity he received these files. According to a transfer form in his bio file, his office sent these records to the archives while he was president and COO. The files pertain to the launch and closure of the short-lived magazine TV-Cable Week and the testing of the magazine Picture Week.

Biographical Note
According to his bio file, N. (Nicholas) J. Nicholas, Jr. joined Time Inc. in 1964 in the Comptroller's office. Beginning in April 1969, he assisted Otto Fuerbringer on the newspaper acquisition project. He briefly served as an assistant to Time Inc. President James Shepley before becoming assistant treasurer of Time Inc. focusing on video in 1971. He served as the president of Manhattan Cable then the president of the Home Box Office (HBO) before becoming the Video Group vice president. In April 1981, he left the Video Group to coordinate strategy development for Time Inc. In August 1982, he was named chief financial officer of Time Inc. He was elected to the Board of Directors in 1983. In March 1984 he was appointed an executive vice president of Time Inc. overseeing video operations. The Board designated him to become president and chief operating officer of Time Inc. effective September 1986. Following the merger of Time Inc. with Warner Communications, he became president of Time Warner Inc. in 1989. When J. Richard Munro stepped down as co-chairman and co-CEO of Time Warner, Nicholas took over the co-CEO position serving with Steve Ross. Nicholas resigned from Time Warner in early 1992.
