Series II.B. President, Chairman of the Board, and Chairman of the Executive Committee: James A. Linen Files, 1941-1977, inclusive
Extent
Scope and Contents Note
James A. Linen's files document his tenure as president, chairman of the board, and chairman of the executive committee. The records contain two decades of his appointment books, detailed information on his speeches, and document Time Inc.'s participation in establishing the Prince of Songkhla University in Thailand with the project led by the Office of the President. His appointment books and speeches were sent to the Time Inc. Archives as complete runs without separation by title held so his files span from his time as Time publisher through his retirement.
Arrangement Note
Organized into three subseries:
Subseries II.B.1. Appointment Books
Subseries II.B.2. Speech Files
Subseries II.B.3. Prince of Songkhla University Files
Biographical Note
James A. Linen joined Time Inc. in 1934 as part of Time's editorial staff. After holding advertising positions for Time and Life, he was named publisher of Time in 1945.
In 1960, during a major realignment of Time Inc., the board named him president of Time Inc. at the same time they appointed Andrew Heiskell as chairman of the board. Linen stepped down from this position in 1969 due to illness. At that time, he was named the executive committee chairman holding this position until at least 1975. According to his obituary by the Associate Press, Linen retired from Time Inc. in 1977. He remained listed as a board member through January 1978.

Subseries II.B.1. Appointment Books, 1952-1976, inclusive
Extent
Scope and Contents
James A. Linen's appointment books document his activities while he was publisher of Time, president of Time Inc., chairman of the executive committee, through his retirement when he was still serving as a member of the board. Most years have two books with the same handwriting and matching appointments although both books do not always have all the same appointments. Usually one of the books has the JAL monogram. Possibly one book was for Linen's desk and one was for his assistant's desk. Some of the appointment books have the name of one of his assistants, either Gloria "Gigi" Conn or Janet Olson.

Subseries II.B.2. Speech Files, 1941-1977, inclusive
Extent
Scope and Contents Note
Linen's speeches span from his time as publisher of Time, president of Time Inc., and the executive committee chairman. The majority of his files document specific speeches with a small amount of general files for speeches by him and other at Time Inc. Most of his speeches were at fundraisers for city community chests and other social welfare organizations.
The General Files include a chronological list of Linen's speeches, speech material that was sent to his assistant Roger Stone, and collected speech texts. The chronological list documents his speeches from 1952 to 1977 with a note to check a National Urban League folder for "less important talks." The texts files contain typed transcripts and conference programs or pamphlets from the event hosting the speech. Linen also collected speeches from other Time Inc. executives with the largest amount from co-founder Henry R. Luce.
Arrangement Note
Organized with general files in the front followed by speeches by city. The By City files are in alphabetical order by city name based on the original order. The General speech files were in no specific order and alphabetical order has been imposed by the archivist.

Subseries II.B.3. Prince of Songkhla University Files, 1965-1970, inclusive
Extent
Scope and Contents Note
The Prince of Songkla University files contains material regarding Time Inc.'s participation in a project with Thailand and the Overseas Educational Service to establish and support the Prince of Songkla University in southern Thailand. Linen and his assistant John Millington were the primary contacts from Time Inc. and are equally represented in the files. The main correspondents from Thailand are Foreign Minister Thanat Khoman and the first dean of the university Stang Mongkolsuk.
A good indicator of Time Inc.'s relationship with Thailand during this project is a playful agreement titled the Declaration of the Pacific, which is among Thanat's documents. Its articles declare that receiving chicken at a meal shall be a cause for war, everyone is entitled to eight hours sleep per night, the parties agree to maintain upkeep of golf courses near them, and designates Time Inc.'s and Thailand's enemies so that each may protect the other. Among the enemies listed are Time's main competitor, the editors of Newsweek.
