Scope and Contents Note
Peter Costiglio's files date from 1989 to 1993, the beginning of his tenure as vice president of communications. They contain Costiglio's public relations output, including planning files for press releases, media statements, fact books, company brochures, industry events, and publicity campaigns. There is a large volume of correspondence with Time Inc. staff, including Chief Executive Officer Reginald K. Brack, as well as external communications, and reader mail and public response to media under the Time Warner umbrella. Topics include controversy over Warner Bros. Records release of the song "Cop Killer" by Ice-T's metal band Body Count and the publication of Madonna's explicit Sex book in 1992.
The files also contain clippings and copies of articles written about Time Inc., media requests, related internal communication, and responses by Costiglio on behalf of the company such as letters to the editor or press statements. Other materials include annual reports; corporate calendars; interoffice memoranda; FYI newsletter story lists; conference files; speeches created for company executives; employee programs; Magazine Publishers of America organization files; and legal case files, including lawsuits related to copyright infringement and libel. Present throughout the collection are handwritten notes created by Costiglio.
Arrangement Note
Organized alphabetically. Two separate runs of alphabetical subject files created by Peter Costiglio were integrated into a single series by the archivist.
Biographical Note
Peter Costiglio was vice president of communications for Time Inc. from 1989 to 2005. In April 1989, he was appointed by Time Inc. Magazine Company Chief Executive Officer Reginald K. Brack to fulfill a new position created during the merger with Warner Communications. As vice president of communications, Costiglio represented Time Inc. as public relations spokesman and oversaw internal communications for the company's magazine subsidiary (known as Time Inc. Magazine Company from 1989 to 1991). He was a member of the Magazine Publishers of America (MPA - The Association of Magazine Media) and served as chair of its Public Relations Committee from 1994 to 1997. Costiglio previously worked at Prudential-Bache Securities and left Time Inc. in 2005.
