Series I. Performances and Exhibitions, 1966-2016, inclusive
Extent
Extent
Scope and Contents
Series I. Performances and Exhibitions contains video recordings, paper documentation, and digital files related to Diane Torr's performances and exhibitions. Paper files for events include ephemera such as posters, postcards, pamphlets and flyers; planning documentation, such as correspondence, technical addendums, and performance contracts; photographs; press clippings and press releases; and performance setlists, cue sheets, artists statements, and scripts.
In addition to singular performances, this series contains documentation of Torr's interational tours, including "Amoebic Evolution" and "Catastrophe and Beguilement" in the late 1980s, "Ready Aye Ready (A Standing Cock Has Nae Conscience)" in the early 1990s, "Drag Kings and Subjects" from the 1990s through the 2010s, and "Donald Does Dusty" in the 2000s. The series also includes materials related to Torr's band Disband, the "Go Drag!" festival that she organized with Bridge Markland, and numerous exhibitions at galleries such as the Glasgow Gallery of Modern Art, NYU's Grey Art Gallery, and the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston.
The materials in this series portray Torr's role in cultivating the "young kings" movement, when drag kings began to emerge in 1980s-1990s New York City. Her drag characters are highlighted in the materials, including Danny King ("Drag Kings and Subjects"), a "middle-aged, middle-American, middle-management guy" who "represents a stereotype of what it is to be a man"; Jack Spratt, a singer/songwriter Cockney fan of the Who; Hamish McAllister ("Ready Aye Ready"), an aficionado of the Scottish poet Robert Burns; and Charles Beresford, a gay man based on one of Torr's friends who passed away in 1992 from HIV/AIDS. Collaborators and contemporaries represented in this series include Annie Sprinkle, Bridge Markland, Johnny Science, and Del La Grace Volcano. Venues that Torr performed at most often include WOW Cafe, Performance Space 122, Franklin Furnace, Club Casanova, the Pyramid, and Club 57.
Arrangement
This series is arranged chronologically, with materials from the same event grouped together. Undated events are arranged alphabetically at the end of the list. Performance photographs were arranged into event files when possible, and are otherwise grouped together at the end of the series.
