Series 14: Architectural records, 1856-2006, inclusive
Scope and Contents
The series documents various alterations, renovations, and new construction at Packer, dating from circa 1880s to 2006. It includes plans, specifications, blueprints, correspondence, and related files.
School floor plans dating from circa 1860 are located in a bound volume labeled "Compositions," which is included in Sub-series 8.1: Student publications (box 497).
Arrangement
The series is organized into two sub-series:
Sub-series 14.1: Architectural drawings, plans, and administrative records
Sub-series 14.2: Playground design
Sub-series 14.1: Architectural drawings, plans, and administrative records, 1856-2006, inclusive
Extent
Scope and Contents
The sub-series contains architectural drawings, blueprints, floor plans, and projected renderings, dating from circa 1880s-2006.
It includes materials prepared by the Chapman, Evans, and Delehanty firm that document the extensive alterations and additions made to the Packer Collegiate Institute in 1957 and 1958. The various renderings and blueprints provide detailed information on Chapman's alterations. Large-scale floor plans of the entire campus are filed, as well as specific treatments of such areas as the dining room, gymnasium, sundeck, library, and greenroom.
The sub-series also includes drawings and blueprints created by various firms as proposals for the installation of the institute's steam heating system circa 1882. It is unclear which, if any of the firms, actually won the contract. Dated the same year is a correspondence from Otis Brothers & Company regarding the installation of an electric elevator. The company provided Packer with a blueprint for this elevator on June 5, 1891. The series also contains architectural blueprints and watercolors from 1944.
The plan books and specifications document a variety of alterations, building additions, and demolitions undertaken at Packer from the 1880s to the 1950s. The materials in the series affords researchers a vantage from which to better understand the architectural evolution of the campus at 170 Joralemon Street. Of special interest are: Architect William Tubby's specifications and instructions for the major alterations performed before World War I; James Gamble Rogers' materials and plans for the building's subsequent overhaul in 1940; the promotional materials describing proposed additions to mark Packer's centennial celebration in 1945; and intensive specifications describing the large-scale alterations performed in 1957 by Champan, Evans, and Delehanty.
