Abstract
Ted H. Jacobsen is a teacher and labor activist from New York City, who served as the Secretary of the New York City Central Labor Council, AFL-CIO until 2007. A member of the United Federation of Teachers (UFT), the New York City Central Labor Council, and numerous other labor organizations in the city, Jacobsen represented nearly 400 affiliated local unions comprised of the city's working men and women. This collection documents his career and activism and consists of memoranda, correspondence, ephemera, photographs, and statistical reports concerning various aspects of labor relations in New York City, including individual unions, coalition groups, labor legislation, and political developments in New York. The collection also contains subject files documenting Jacobsen's involvement in numerous labor-related organizations in the city, including the New York City Central Labor Council and the United Federation of Teachers.
Historical/Biographical Note
Ted H. Jacobsen is a teacher and labor activist from New York City, who served as the Secretary of the New York City Central Labor Council, AFL-CIO until 2007. After serving in the US Army as a field artillery officer, he became a teacher, joining the United Federation of Teachers (UFT). In his role through the Council, he represented nearly 400 affiliated local unions comprised of the city's working men and women. During his tenure, the Council under then-President Thomas Van Arsdale organized numerous demonstrations against the apartheid government in South Africa, as well as pressuring the City to divest its investments in corporations that supported the practice. During the 1965 Delano Grape Strike, he assisted Caesar Chavez and members of the United Farm Workers in their boycott of New York agricultural products to pressure growers in California to enter a collective bargaining agreement with their farm workers.
He held numerous related positions, including: Vice President of the New York State Union Label and Services Trades, AFL-CIO; Treasurere of the Educators Chapter of the Jewish Labor Committee; foundign member of the Coalition of Labor Union Women; a founding member of the UFT's Italian American Studies Committee; helped establish the Council's Asian American Labor Committee; was a delegate to the founding convention of the National AFL-CIO's Asian Pacific American Labor Alliance; a member of the Citizens' Commission for the African Union; a board member of the United Way of New York City; a trustee of the American Red Cross of Greater Nrew York; and a former advisor to the United African Congress in NYC.

Photographs were separated from this collection during initial processing and were established as a separate collection, the Ted H. Jacobsen Photographs (PHOTOS 248). In 2014, the photograph collection was reincorporated into the Ted H. Jacobsen Papers (WAG 157). Some photographic prints were rehoused according to their size.
