Abstract

Time's Up is a New York City environmentalist organization whose principal activity is the promotion of bicycle riding and the rights of cyclists through its Critical Mass campaigns. This collection consists of photographs, ephemera, and clippings related to Time's Up environmental organizing in New York City. These documents include posters, pamphlets, zines, flyers, and events calendars created to promote Critical Mass demonstrations and other acts of protest, events and celebrations, and fundraisers for Time's Up. They also include several binders containing local articles related to bike safety, the construction of bike lanes, and cycling events.

Scope and Content Note

This collection consists of materials created and collected by Time's Up in the course of their environmental activism. Materials includes posters, pamphlets, zines, flyers, and event calendars created to promote the organization's events and fundraisers, with particular emphasis on Critical Mass demonstrations and other acts of protest. The collection also includes several binders containing local articles related to bike safety, the construction of bike lanes, and cycling events.

Big pictures of Reclaim The Street into Gardens avenue A. The first Reclaim The Streets in New York city in 1998, Astor Place and Broadway.

Time's Up bicycle repair workshops, one of Simon teaching at Time's Up's Brooklyn space, and two of Susan teaching women-only class in Time's Up's Manhattan Space.

2 Calendars: Monthly calendars including garden clean-ups, bicycle rides, educational workshops, bike rides. Helped create new riders, eventually had enough bike riders to put pressure on the city for safer, greener infrastructure.

Supreme Court New York State, plaintiffs; against Time's Up, defendants.

United States District Court, Rebecca BRAY, plaintiffs; against New-York City

Legal folders containing press releases, letter from the City of New York Police Department to Time's Up threatening to ticket or arrest bicyclists

New York Times article backed up with photographs from Time's Up of the police caught stealing bicycles. This incident then became the Bray case. Time's Up provided evidence that the city was harassing and taking people's bicycles to deter the growth of cycling during a crucial period.
