Abstract

Aaron Bindman was a union organizer and secretary treasurer of the International Longshoremen's and Warehousemen's Union Local 208 (Chicago, Ill.), from 1946-53. The collection contains an autobiographical sketch and curriculum vitae, correspondence, speeches, articles, some pertaining to various teaching/research related travels, including to New Zealand, the USSR, Sweden, Saskatchewan, Canada, etc.

Historical/Biographical Note

Aaron Bindman was a union organizer and secretary treasurer of the International Longshoremen's and Warehousemen's Union Local 208 (Chicago, Ill.), from 1946-53. After four years as a carpenter, he enrolled in the University of Illinois, received a PhD in sociology, which he taught for twenty years.

Scope and Contents

The collection contains an autobiographical sketch and curriculum vitae, correspondence, speeches, articles, some pertaining to various teaching/research related travels, including to New Zealand, the USSR, Sweden, Saskatchewan, Canada, etc. A thin file labeled American Student Union contains a delegates badge from its 5th convention in March, 1939, and an undated letter from George Seldes, circa 1939-41. Bindman was also an amateur sculptor, and there are some two dozen photographs of his work and of himself sculpting.
