Abstract
Edward Carpenter was a British socialist writer and poet, known for his advocacy of natural living, and for his writings on homosexuality and his open espousal of this identity. The collection contains letters and postcards, and printed ephemera.
Historical/Biographical Note
Edward Carpenter (1844-1929) was a British socialist writer and poet, known for his advocacy of natural living, and for his writings on homosexuality and his open espousal of this identity. Carpenter was born to a middle-class family, attended Cambridge University, worked for the University Extension movement in northern England, traveled and lectured, and in 1883 settled in Millthorpe, near Sheffield. In 1891, after his return from a trip to India to study Indian philosophy and religion, he met George Merrill, who would be his companion for nearly forty years. Among his works are Towards Democracy(1883) and The Intermediate Sex(1908). Crane also composed the socialist anthem England Arise!

Contains three letters to, and one letter from Bertram Lloyd (aka "Wolfie"); one letter and two postcards to Harold Munro of the Poetry Bookshop, London; three letters and nine postcards to Grant Richards of London, pertaining to Carpenter's desire to have Richards publish his The Story of Eros and Psycheand his Iolaus: an Anthology of Friendship; nine letters to Miss Annie Riley, first of Sheffield, later of Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts; a clipping from the Evening Standard noting Carpenter's 80th birthday, and a brochure from the Edward Carpenter International Memorial Trust. All the letters and postcards are signed.
