Series I. New York Supreme Court Records, 1825-1915, undated, inclusive

This large series contains legal records from the New York Supreme Court. The New York Supreme Court was the highest trial-level court for civil cases in the state court system in New York County. The bulk of the records consist of common orders that pertain to divorce and separation, personal injury, foreclosure, guardianship, estate, business, landlord-tenant, trademark, patent, and slander disputes from 1848-1910 in New York County. Some of the common orders relate to the City of New York acquiring title to privately held land, particularly for the purpose of street openings. Other common orders relate to disputes involving early New York City railroad companies, particularly the Manhattan Railway Company, Metropolitan Street Railway Company, and the New York Elevated Railroad Company, as well as other railroad companies operating within and beyond New York State. Some common orders relate to notable figures and organizations, such as William "Boss" Tweed, Thomas Edison and the Edison Electric Illuminating Company, the Socialist Labor Party, The New York Times and other presses, and William McAdoo and Theodore Bingham police commissioners of New York City. The series also contains general records of the court that consist of judgments and published proceedings with a small quantity of special material including stenographer's minutes and various exhibit or evidential material.
