Scope and Contents
This series contains correspondence, research notes, manuscripts, reports and newspaper clippings reflecting Leo Hershkowitz's academic and professional work. This includes correspondence and manuscripts pertaining to Leo Hershkowitz's publications Tweed's New York and Wills of Early New York Jews, as well as contracted research reports on historic preservation initiatives, development projects, and legal cases. There are 20 WordPerfect documents containing notes that Hershkowitz took about the history of various New York City banks. There is a substantial amount of material from the United States Supreme Court case New Jersey v. New York, a state sovereignty dispute regarding Ellis Island. Hershkowitz's academic career and leadership at Queens College are reflected in documents about the Historical Documents Collection, as well as his correspondence and collaboration with a variety of archives, historical societies, and research groups. The general correspondence files include futher information about his research projects, publications and conference presentations. This series also includes a small amount of personal ephemera, including graduation certificates and teaching appointments.

Material has been grouped by subject, and arranged alphabetically. Folder titles have been supplied by the archivist.
Physical Characteristics and Technical Requirements
An access terminal is required to view the 20 WordPerfect documents included in this series. The documents are available by appointment for reading room viewing only. Researchers may view the documents' original container and/or carrier via QuickView Plus software on laptops, but the physical carriers themselves are not available for use because of preservation concerns.
