Series V. Newspaper Clippings and Serials, 1830-2001, undated, inclusive
Extent
Scope and Contents
This series contains newspaper clippings of articles and illustrations reflecting the research interests of Leo Hershkowitz. The bulk of the series consists of half-page clipped illustrations that depict historic events—such as parades commemorating the end of war, funerals, and bridge dedications—in cities across the United States and in Europe. Most of the newspapers included in this series were published in the northeastern region of the United States, particularly New York City. Hershkowitz heavily curated clippings from the following major titles: Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper, Gleason's Pictorial Drawing-Room Companion, Illustrated News of the World, and Leslie's Weekly. Included in this series is a bound group of clippings from Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper and Harper's Weekly themed around the life and death of President James A. Garfield. The series also contains a substantial amount of clippings from two newspapers published in German, Frank Leslie's Illustrite Zeitung and Über Land und Meer Allgemeine Illustrite Zeitung, and a small group of clippings published in French from Le Mondé Illustré. There are also a small number of serial publications that appear in this series.
Arrangement
The clippings are foldered by publication title or topic, and arranged alphabetically.
