Scope and Content Note
Directly related to Morris Schappes' personal life, this series includes correspondence (1928-2002); biographical articles and brief sketches; interview transcripts and Schappes' responses to several questionnaires; items associated with the schools he attended and those where he served on the faculty -- Townsend Harris Hall High School, City College of New York (CCNY), Columbia University, Queens College, the Jefferson School and the School for Jewish Studies; documents relating his experiences with the Rapp-Coudert Committee, the Schappes Defense Committee, his time in prison and subsequent parole; materials describing his many personal appearances, lectures and speaking engagements (1943-1994); a selection of his writings -- articles, book reviews and letters to the editor; and ephemera such as identification cards, his wedding ketubah, citizenship papers and copies of personal photographs.
