Abstract
Mark Starr was an educator and liberal activist, and was the educational director for the International Ladies Garment Workers Union from 1935-1960. In addition to several images of Starr, the collection principally consists of photographs of women workers in Great Britain during World War II.
Historical/Biographical Note
Born in England, Mark Starr (1894-1985) served from 1935-1960 as educational director for the International Ladies Garment Workers Union, and had a lifelong interest in adult and workers education. A liberal activist, he was also associated with the American Labor Party, Americans for Democratic Action, the League for Industrial Democracy, and the Liberal Party.

Scope and Content Note
Includes only six photographs specifically related to Starr's work: one 8 x 10 print shows Starr participating in a special award presentation to Jan Masaryk by the League for Industrial Democracy and another includes Starr in a group portrait of Liberal Party officers. The bulk of the collection is a group of British Information Services photographs of women workers in England during WWII. Women are shown in machine shops, at an ordinance factory canteen, an aircraft factory canteen, working as "Lumberjills" and painting railway cars.

Immediate Source of Acquisition
Mark Starr donated his papers to Tamiment Library in 1963. Helen Norton, Starr's wife, donated an additional 45 feet of books and papers following his death in 1985. Photographs from Starr's papers have been separated from these materials and established as their own collection. The accession number associated with these photographs is 1988.007. An additional donation of one hundred sixty-eight black and white photographs taken between the 1920s and 1940s was added to the collection in 2009. The accession number associated with this gift is 2009.057.
