Abstract
The New York City Taxi Drivers' Union, Local 3036 Audio Recordings consist of 258 audio recordings of Union meetings, radio interviews, educational programs, and lectures dating from 1966 to 1981. The recordings portray the internal and external organizing activities of Union members as well as the organizational structure of the Union. The New York City Taxi Drivers' Union, Local 3036 was formed on July 1, 1966 and Harry Van Arsdale, Jr. was elected its first president. In the 1970s, Local 3036 became affiliated with the Service Employees International Union (SEIU).
Historical Note
The New York City Taxi Drivers' Union, Local 3036 was formed on July 1, 1966 and elected Harry Van Arsdale, Jr., as their first President. At its peak, Local 3036 had almost 35,000 members. Local 3036 was active until the late 1980s, when it dissolved and merged with SEIU Local 74.
Van Arsdale also directed the establishment of the Union's predecessor, the Taxi Driver's Organizing Committee (TDOC). In the year leading up to the Local 3036's formation, the TDOC won elections conducted by the National Labor Relations in 82 garages throughout the city and came to represent nearly 18,000 taxi drivers and other workers within the fleet garages.

About this Guide
Processing Information
Decisions regarding arrangement, description, and physical interventions for this collection prior to 2021 are unknown. In May 2021, box numbers were attached at interview level and collection level notes were written for compliance with DACS and ACM Required Elements for Archival Description.
In September 2023, this collection was arranged and described by an archivist. The collection was divided into series based on recording content and intellectually arranged within the series. 125 quarter inch audio reels and 91 audiocassettes that had previously been separated into OH 500 were re-integrated into the collection. File titles were taken directly from audiotape labels and edited minimally for accessibility. Gendered terms in Series I. (i.e. "Chairmen," "Commiteemen") were edited for inclusivity. Audiotapes were physically arranged by format and item identifier.
