Abstract

Leland Stowe (1899-1994) was an American journalist, author, and professor, best known for his war correspondence reporting. The Leland Stowe Papers (1986) contain sections of Stowe's unpublished book, Between the Crossfires: The Case History of a Foreign Correspondent Investigated by the FBI. These sections contain a compilation of his FBI file, letters, and press clippings which all relate to the FBI's investigation of Stowe after he publicly supported the Spanish Republican's cause while covering the Spanish Civil War as a foreign correspondent in the 1930s.

Biographical Note

Leland Stowe (1899-1994) was an American journalist, author, and professor, best known for his war correspondence reporting. He worked as a foreign correspondent in Paris in 1926 for the New York Herald Tribune, and eventually won a Pulitzer Prize in 1930 for his coverage of The Hague conference on reparations. Stowe covered the Spanish Civil War in the 1930s on behalf of the New York Herald Tribune and was later investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation after he publicly supported the Spanish Republican's cause during the war. During World War II, he worked as a war correspondent for the Chicago Daily News and the The New York Post. He later became Director of Radio Free Europe's News and Information Service in the 1950s and in 1955 joined the University of Michigan as a journalism professor. He also contributed to Reader's Digest as an editor and staff writer.

This collection contains sections of Leland Stowe's unpublished book Between the Crossfires: The Case History of a Foreign Correspondent Investigated by the FBI, which was a compilation of notated copies of his FBI file, letters, and press clippings, all related to the FBI's investigation of Stowe after he publicly supported the Spanish Republican's cause during the Spanish Civil War in the 1930s.

Wagner Labor Archives in January 2001 as part of the relocation of the ALBA collections from Brandeis to New York University.
