Lewis Morris Rutherfurd (1816-1892) was the son of Robert Walter Rutherfurd (1788-1871) and Sabina Morris Rutherfurd (1789-1857). He was an astrophysicist at Columbia University in New York City. Most of the material in the series consists of letters from his family; very little relates to his work as an astrophysicist. The series includes some articles written by him in his professional capacity.

Most of the letters are from members of Lewis Morris Rutherfurd's immediate family, many from Lewis Morris Rutherfurd's son, Rutherfurd Stuyvesant. Subjects addressed by Rutherfurd Stuyvesant include his interest in yachting, his travels to Europe, his hunting trips to the western territories of the U.S. in the mid-1880's, his business interests (in which his father may have been involved), and occasionally politics.
Persons who corresponded with Lewis Morris Rutherfurd regarding his work as an astronomer include G.B. Airy of the Royal Observatory in 1875, W.R. Pickering of Harvard in 1888, and J.K. Rees of Columbia University in 1890.
