Abstract
This collection includes genealogical information about the Kip, Schuyler, and Lestrade families as well as photographs of the Lestrade family and World War I-era biplanes.
Biographical / Historical
The bulk of the collection is related to Schuyler Lestrade (1884-1965), a New Yorker who flew as a pilot in World War I (see photographs in folders 3-4) and later became president of Hydrox Chemical Co. The collection traces the Lestrade family's descent from the Kip and Schuyler families, two early and important families in New York's history.
The earliest papers in the collection document the admissions of Charles H. Close (1819-1873) to the New-York Historical Society in 1856. Close appears near the end of Edwin R. Purple's Contributions to the History of the Kip Family of New York and New Jersey, when he marries Mary Van Antwerp Lynch (b.1821), a direct Kip descendant, in 1839. Their daughter, Emma Louise Close (1840-1901), marries Charles Peter Schuyler (1839-1874) of New York in 1860. Charles and Emma Schuyler's daughter, Mary V. Schuyler (1861-1916), marries James Wilkie Lestrade (1854-1937) in 1882. The Lestrades have three sons, Harold, Louis, and Schuyler.
Arrangement
The documents and photographs in this collection remain in the order in which they were received from the donor.
Scope and Contents
This collection includes genealogical information about the Kip and Schuyler families, including Edwin R. Purple's Contributions to the History of the Kip Family of New York and New Jersey with manuscript additions, manuscript notes about the "colonial Schuyler line," papers related to Charles H. Close's admission to the New-York Historical Society, and a manuscript "pedigree of Mary N. Close and Emma L. Schuyler."
The rest of the collection focuses on Schuyler Lestrade, a Kip and Schuyler descendant on his mother's side. Photographs document Lestrade's childhood and his time as a pilot. The collection includes many photographs of biplanes from the 1910s, including images that may be from World War I.

Scope and Contents
Formerly a photo album, this collection of 77 photographs of early planes and pilots has been disbound and rehoused in mylar sheets. The bulk of the photographs document planes on the ground and in flight, including planes that have crashed. Most of the planes are single propeller biplanes that probably date from the 1910s. Many of the photos include men wearing uniforms, suggesting that these photos may be from World War I. Schuyler Lestrade appears in some of the photos.
