Scope and Contents

This collection documents Alfred T. Goodell's time as a Forty-Niner during the California Gold Rush. A manuscript scroll (believed to be in Goodell's hand, though this cannot be confirmed) discusses his travels from Oregon to Butte City on the Sacramento River and his time as a prospector in California. The collection also includes two typescripts, one that transcribes the scroll and a longer typescript that draws from additional notes by Goodell that are not present in this collection. The longer typescript discusses his early life, voyage by boat around Cape Horn to San Francisco, efforts to find gold in California, trip by boat to Oregon to run a store, a return trip through Southern Oregon and Northern California for additional prospecting, and his final return through Panama to New York. Also included are five tintypes, one of Goodell and his wife and four of unidentified subjects (though the men in the other images may be Forty-Niners), a copyright application submitted by Goodell's heirs, and correspondence with a press interested in publishing his memoir.
