Woodrow Wilson letter to Roland Cotton Smith

Abstract

A typed letter signed by Woodrow Wilson on White House letterhead, dated 5 January 1917, marked "Personal" to Rev. Dr. Roland Cotton Smith at St. John's Rectory in Washington, D.C. In the two paragraph letter, Wilson acknowledges Smith's letter of January 2, notes that they have an understanding of each other's position, and states "I must frankly say in reply to your inquiry about Secretary Lane that I should personally prefer that no official member of the administration should appear upon the programme with the gentleman I have mentioned."
