Scope and Contents note
French and English. The bulk of this series consists of depositions given before the Mayor, acting in the capacity as Justice of the Peace. Cases involve theft, trespassing, verbal threats, threatening behavior, assaults, gambling, alcohol, maritime deserters, the mutinous behavior of sailors, indentured servitude, runaway slaves, public balls, domestic violence, and dueling.
This series also contains summonses, discharge notices, power of attorney forms, documents relating to free persons of color (proof of residency, character witness), recognizances, a copy of a will, and legal documents (many are copies) pertaining to cases in New Orleans, Louisiana, Pennsylvania, and New York. Also included are correspondence and the legal papers of Judge Joshua Lewis and Judge Henry Bry.
