Series I: Art Practice

Subseries A includes Montano's administrative papers, which include informal and formal proposals for performances, videos, and text. More informal proposals take the form of handwritten performance ideas, many of which were realized and exist in other parts of her archive. This series also contains her grant applications, loan agreements, business correspondence, and emails with arts organizations, museums, and foundations that range from the beginning of her career to 2014.

Subseries B follows Montano's work as the author of several published works. These works include Art in Everyday Life, Letters from Linda Montano, and You Too Are a Performance Artist. The subseries also includes drafts and interviews Montano compiled for the book Performance Artists Talking in the '80s, in which artists talk about food, sex, death, and money. There are also book galleys, correspondence, artists' statements, and smaller pieces written for articles and exhibition catalogues.

Subseries C includes interviews Montano conducted for her book project entitled Performance Artists Talking in the '80s. It also contains material related to interviews of Montano by others for articles, both published and unpublished.

Subseries D contains mostly handwritten research and articles on a variety of subjects that informed Montano's art/life practices. Her research also serves as an extension of her art documentation. Themes include spirituality, astrology, health, religion, grief, meditation, and music.

This subseries tracks press about Montano's career from the 1970s to the early 2000s. It includes promotional postcards, advertisements, and press releases. It also contains newspaper clippings, reviews and articles written about her art and performances, from publications like High Performance Magazine to the New York Times.

Subseries F contains photographic material of both a personal and professional nature. Other photographic material related to collaborations, teaching, and family can be found within Series II-V.

This series contains some of Montano's artwork, including her series of "Dad Paintings," and her "Shoe" series. It also documents the art she produced and outifits she during her performance "7 Years of Living Art," and her study of the chakras. Other pieces include prints, pencil sketches, paintings, drawings. Montano also kept annotated photo albums and scrapbooks that were created both by her and her grandmother. A large portion of artwork can also be found in Oversize Series I, Subseries G.
