Extent
Scope and Contents
The subseries consists of property records (including deeds, title searches, and maps) and materials documenting city efforts to acquire land in Brooklyn. The files date from 1851 to 1918.
The city sought to acquire property for various municipal purposes, such as public schools, libraries, police stations, fire stations, and parks. The subseries also includes records related to underwater land rights in the East River, Jamaica Bay, Gowanus Bay, and Gravesend Bay. One file of note relates to property located in the Navy Yard and the Wallabout Market, including correspondence with the U.S. Secretary of the Navy and a detailed property map.
Arrangement note
The subseries is arranged alphanumerically by street name (Butler St., Lee Ave., Pearl St., etc.) or location (Lafayette Square, Prospect Park, Jamaica Bay, etc.). Files with multiple or unidentified locations are filed at the end of the subseries. Property records were found unorganized and are arranged alphanumerically to assist researchers.
Folder titles were derived from the documents. The names of property owners are included in the folder title or notes field when known.
Please see the Processing Information note for additional general information regarding the arrangement of the series in this collection.

Scope and Contents
The subseries consists of property records (including deeds, title searches, and maps) and records documenting city efforts to acquire land outside of Brooklyn. The files date from 1883 to 1915.
The following areas are represented in the subseries: Flushing, Jamaica, Long Island City, and Newtown (modern Queens County); Hempstead and Oyster Bay (modern Nassau County), Smithtown (part of modern Suffolk County), Richmond (modern Staten Island), and Manhattan.
The majority of the records relate to Brooklyn's water supply, especially in the Towns of Jamaica and Hempstead (specifically Freeport, Merrick, Pine Stream, Rockville Centre, Valley Stream, and Wantagh).
Of particular note is a record documenting the establishment of the border between Queens County and Nassau County in 1898-1899.
Arrangement note
The subseries is arranged alphabetically by location to assist researchers as the property records were found unorganized. Locations are derived directly from the documents and reflect 19th century boundaries.
Folder titles were derived from the documents. The names of property owners have been included in the folder title or notes field when known.
Please see the Processing Information note for additional general information regarding the arrangement of the series in this collection.
