Scope and Contents
The series primarily consists of correspondence with members of the municipal government of the City of Brooklyn (and after 1897, the City of New York) regarding legal matters. It also includes a smaller amount of correspondence from private citizens and organizations regarding pending or possible legal actions against the city.
The correspondence span the years 1866 to 1913 (bulk dates 1898 to 1903).
Issues documented in the correspondence include property and other assessments, civil service employment, water supply, and various claims made against the city. Correspondence related to specific individual complaints can also be found in Series 1: Case Files.
