Abstract
The John Yapp Culyer collection dates from circa 1870s to 1955 and consists of photographs and newspaper clippings concerning John Yapp Culyer and other members of the Culyer family.
Biographical note
John Yapp Culyer (1839-1924) was the Chief Landscape Engineer of Prospect Park. During the park's construction, Culyer was charged by the park's commission to oversee the development of the park's public uses. He also oversaw the construction of Ocean Parkway, the Concourse at Coney Island, and was involved in the construction of several railroads in Brooklyn. Culyer was an eyewitness to the assassination of U.S. President Abraham Lincoln.

Scope and Contents
The John Yapp Culyer collection dates from circa 1870s to 1955 and consists of photographs and newspaper clippings concerning John Yapp Culyer and other members of the Culyer family.
The clippings include an article about Culyer's reminiscences of witnessing the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, two obituaries written for Culyer, an obituary for John Yapp Culyer's son, Thurston Culyer, and two articles about the Culyer family's summer home located in Mt. Kisco, New York.
The photographs consist of portraits of Culyer and his wife, and one group family photograph.

About this Guide
Processing Information
Minimally processed to the collection level. The Culyer family photographs had been removed from the collection in 1998 (as V1998.052), and were returned by processing archivist John Zarrillo in September 2015. This collection was rehoused and the finding aid revised by Dee Bowers in 2023. At that time, clippings were photocopied and the originals discarded.
