Abstract
One 1775 bill of sale for a canoe between Rem Cowenhoven of Brooklyn and Hendrick Brant of New York City.
Biographical note
Rem Cowenhoven was a resident of Brooklyn and a member of Brooklyn's prominent Cowenhoven family (alternate spellings include Couwenhoven, Kouwenhoven, and Covenhoven), whose common ancestor, Wolphert Gerritson Van Kouwenhoven, emigrated from the Netherlands to the town of New Utrecht in the Dutch colony of New Netherland (later New York) in the 17th century. Rem Cowenhoven was among the loyalists who signed an oath of loyalty to the British Crown in December 1776.
