Biographical Note
William Henry Stillwell (1858-1944) was the son of Stephen N. Stillwell (d. 1880). He was an attorney with offices on 177 Montague Street in Brooklyn and resided at 262 93rd Street at the time of his death. Stillwell was also a local historian who wrote several books on Brooklyn history, mostly focusing on the neighborhood of Gravesend.
Scope and Contents
One bound volume containing a typescript written by William Henry Stillwell in 1894 and titled A History of Gravesend, Kings County, N.Y.: From Its Settlement to the Close of the Dutch Government, 1673. The typescript also features illustrated maps of various regions of Gravesend, an engraving of Stillwell, and an index compiled by Edna Huntington, librarian at the Long Island Historical Society (later the Brooklyn Historical Society). Interfiled toward the end of the volume are copies of a 1797 map and a 1786 legal document regarding property transgressions committed by Albert Voorheis. Two letters from the Home Title Insurance Company, dated 1911 and 1915, indicating the Company's intention to donate these two latter items, are also included.
