Journals, written by Jasper Danckaerts and Peter Sluyter of the Netherlands, describing two voyages to and tours of the American colonies, particularly New York, during the period 1679 to 1681 and the year 1683.

Biographical Note

Jasper Danckaerts was born on May 7, 1639 in Vlissengan in The Netherlands. Danckaerts was a founder of the Protestant religious sect Labadism and traveled to the American colonies with Peter Sluyter (1645-1722) to start a community there. They were granted land by Augustine Herman in 1683 in what is now the state of Maryland. Danckaerts returned to The Netherlands and died between 1702-1704.

Scope and Contents

This collection includes journals, written by Jasper Danckaerts and Peter Sluyter of the Netherlands, describing two voyages to and tours of the American colonies, particularly New York, during the period 1679 to 1681 and the year 1683. Danckaerts and Sluyter made the journeys under the names J. Schilders and P. Vorstman. The pages are numbered and the journals are written entirely in Dutch. Pages 193-216 are missing.
