Abstract
The manuscript consists of a handwritten transcription of a chapter from Drake's book, Our Colonial Homes, entitled "Home Sweet Home." The topic of the manuscript is the history of the childhood home of actor, writer, and playwright John Howard Payne (1791-1852), located in East Hampton, Long Island.
Biographical note
Samuel Adams Drake (1833-1905) was a prolific writer and author of books and articles, primarily dealing with the topics of New England and early American history, American folklore, and the American revolution.

The manuscript consists of a handwritten transcription of a chapter, pages 176-183, from Samuel Adams Drake's book, Our Colonial Homes, entitled "Home Sweet Home." The topic of the manuscript is the history of the childhood home of actor, writer, and playwright John Howard Payne (1791-1852) in East Hampton, Long Island, where Payne's grandfather owned an old colonial house. Payne is most noted for his Civil War song "Home! Sweet Home!," the title of Drake's chapter.
