Series 1: History of the Long Island Historical Society manuscript, circa 1906, inclusive
The one item comprising this series, History of the Long Island Historical Society, is a handwritten manuscript by Emma Toedteberg describing the founding of the Society, its collections policy, significant items in the collection, and the trend toward focusing on local history collections.
Series 2: Toedteberg family papers, 1849-1938, inclusive
The earliest document in the series is Augustus Toedteberg and Catherine Lager's marriage certificate, followed by christening certificates, written in German. These christening certificates indicate Augustus and Catherine had two or three children prior to Emma and Louise who died in early childhood. A deed to a Green-Wood Cemetery plot addressed to Augustus Toedteberg suggests that these infants were buried together in a Toedteberg family plot. Clippings in the series discuss Augustus and Emma's voyages to Europe, Emma Toedteberg's work at the Long Island Historical Society, and the disposition of her bookplate collection after her death. Correspondence and LIHS board minutes also touch upon Emma's contributions and legacy at LIHS.
Series 3: European travel scrapbooks, 1886-1913, inclusive
This series consists of scrapbooks compiled by Emma Toedteberg to commemorate two of her European voyages, with each voyage represented by two scrapbook volumes. The first, in which she accompanied her father, took place from June to September of 1886 and contains printed material from landmarks and cities she visited. Destinations from this voyage include England, Germany, Switzerland, Belgium, and Holland. The second voyage occured in 1913, and was documented by Emma Toedteberg with postcards. Locales represented in the postcard books are England, Belgium, France, Switzerland, and Italy.
Series 4: Photographs, circa late 19th century-early 20th century, inclusive
This series contains 14 images of Emma, Augustus, Catherine, and Louise Toedteberg. Formats include cabinet cards, black-and-white prints, and a hand-painted portrait.
