This collection, with materials dated 1940 to 1965, consists of certificates, office memos, personnel documents, printed materials, and photographs relating to Gene T. Condrill's employment at the New York Naval Shipyard in Brooklyn, N.Y.
Biographical note
Gene T. Condrill was employed at the New York Naval Shipyard in Brooklyn, N.Y. for over 20 years in the mid-20th century. Condrill worked as a sheetmetal worker, leadingman, and ship progressman throughout his career. He was a member of the Sheet Metal Workers' International Association. Condrill lived on Hoyt Street in Brooklyn.
Historical note
The origins of the Brooklyn Navy Yard (officially known as the New York Naval Shipyard) date back to 1801, when the United States Navy acquired what had previously been a small, privately owned shipyard in order to construct naval vessels. By the time the Department of Defense ceased shipbuilding activities at the Brooklyn Navy Yard in 1966, 88 vessels had been manufactured at the facility. In 1967, the Brooklyn Navy Yard was acquired by the City of New York and was converted for private commercial use.

This collection, with materials dated 1940 to 1965, consists of certificates, office memos, personnel documents, printed materials, and photographs relating to Gene T. Condrill's employment at the New York Naval Shipyard in Brooklyn, N.Y. Printed materials includes a ship christening program and multiple issues of two periodicals, New York Navy Yard Shipworker and Engineers' Outlook. Two black-and-white photographs, circa 1945, depict shipyard employees and appear to have been published in New York Navy Yard Shipworker.
