Abstract

Four 8x10" black and white photographs of Shirley Chisholm taken on June 23, 1969 by Jimmy Tafoya, staff photographer at the Detroit Free Press.

Biographical note

Shirley Anita Chisholm (nee St. Hill) was born in New York City on November 10, 1924. When she was two years old, her family relocated from Brooklyn to her mother's native Barbados, where they remained until Chisholm was 10. She attended Brooklyn College and Columbia University. In 1964 she was elected to the New York State Assembly as a Democrat representing the Brooklyn neighborhoods of Bushwick and Bedford-Stuyvesant. In 1968, she was elected to the United States House of Representatives, the first Black woman to have done so. She served for seven terms. She also sought the Democratic presidential nomination in 1972. After retiring from Congress in 1982, Chisholm was appointed to the Purington Chair at Mount Holyoke College and led the National Political Congress of Black women.
