Abstract
The Carey McWilliams Papers contain correspondence, press releases, and other documents relating to the civil rights of teachers in New York, New York. A lawyer, author, and editor, McWilliams advocated for the civil rights of working class Americans. He was the editor of The Nation from 1955 to 1975.
Biographical Note
Carey McWilliams (1905-1980) was a lawyer, author, and editor who advocated for the civil rights of working class Americans. Obtaining his law degree from the University of Southern California in 1927, McWilliams practiced law until 1938 when he was selected to head California's Department of Immigration and Housing. During his four year appointment he wrote a book, Factories in the Fields, about the lives of migrant farm workers in California. Moving to New York City in 1951, McWilliams continued writing about the working class. He was the editor of The Nation from 1955 to 1975.
