Abstract

The Profession and Administrative Staff Association (PASTA) at the Museum Modern Art was the first union of museum professionals in the United States and is now affiliated with UAW Local 2110. This collection contains meeting minutes, negotiation documents and contracts, grievances, leaflets, committee files, and strike materials.

Historical Note

The Profession and Administrative Staff Association (PASTA) at the Museum Modern Art (MOMA) began in response to discrepancies in salaries and concerns regarding job security held by individuals working at MOMA. In 1971, PASTA held elections and officially affiliated with the Distributive Workers of America, as Museum Local No. 1. This was the first union of museum professionals in the United States. PASTA established an affiliation with United Auto Workers (UAW), District 65 in 1980 and is now affiliated with UAW Local 2110. PASTA conducted a strike in 2000 during contract negotiations before MOMA's 2001-2004 expansion project.

Processing Information

Decisions regarding arrangement, description, and physical interventions for this collection prior to 2019 have not been recorded. In 2019, materials were rehoused in new acid-free folders and boxes with spacers in preparation for offsite storage. Original folders were retained when possible. If the original folder was kept, loose labels were stapled to ensure accurate titling and prevent loss of information. Where appropriate, materials were rehoused in archival folders and boxes. If present, original folder titles were used, with any descriptive enhancements by the archivist as necessary. Loose paper materials were placed in archival folders. Water-damaged materials were deaccessioned, and preservation photocopies were made of mold-damaged materials.
