Abstract

Phillip Bonosky (1916-2013) was a novelist and journalist who worked as a cultural editor and Moscow correspondent for the Daily World. Bonosky was a longtime member of the Communist Party USA (CPUSA), and his foreign reporting covered Moscow, Cambodia after the expulsion of the Khmer Rouge, and included interviews with figures such as Afghan leaders in the 1980s and Vietnamese revolutionary and President Hồ Chí Minh. His literary works include the 1953 coming-of-age novel Burning Valley, set during an organizing effort amongst steelworkers in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The Phillip Bonosky Papers (dated 1935-2006) consists of journals, letters, and original writings by Bonosky. The majority of the collection consists of journals that contain typescript manuscripts, as well as daily accounting's of Bonosky's interpretation of domestic and international events, his involvement with the Communist Party of the United States of America (CPUSA), his journalist coverage for the Daily World, and his interactions with a wide range of leftist figures including Steve Nelson, Alexander Trachtenberg, Pettis Perry, and Claudia Jones. Significantly, Bonosky and Alice Neel spent most days together for a period of time and Bonosky's daily journaling offers a day-by-day unfolding of Neel's life as well.

Processing Information

In the spring of 2020, Boxes 20-24 with evidence of mold damage were sent to Polygon for cleaning. These boxes were returned in September 2020.

In April 2023, an accretion of journals and manuscripts were removed from their original housings and rehoused in archival boxes and folders. These materials have been described on the collection-level with a folder-level inventory.
