Series VIII: Navasky at Columbia University, 1963-2015, inclusive
Subseries VIIIA: Columbia Graduate School of Journalism
Scope and Content Note
This subseries contains Navasky materials relating to Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism, where he directs the George Delacorte Center for Magazine Journalism. Highlights include a series of lectures by editors, writers, art directors, and publishers from magazines such as Vanity Fair, The New Yorker, and Harper's. The lectures, delivered as part of the George Delacorte Lecture Series, became chapters in The Art of Making Magazines, edited by Navasky and Evan Cornog (Dean of the School of Communication at Hofstra University and former publisher of the Columbia Journalism Review).
There are also materials associated with Navasky's Magazine Workshop in which students create and publish a complete magazine from scratch. Titled The New York Review of Magazines, it is a magazine about magazines. Workshop materials and full issues are contained in this subseries.
Of particular interest, in Box 75, Folder 31, are items involving Victor Navasky's 2006 appearance on Bill O'Reilly's television show - The Factor. O'Reilly contends that there is a liberal bias in the hiring of teachers at the Columbia University School of Journalism. Navasky denies the existence of bias. The folder contains materials used in preparation for the appearance and, also, threatening email recieved by Navasky.
