Arthur Savage Collection on the Rapp-Coudert Committee
Contains material related to the 1941 dismissal of Jack Foner and Henry Foner from their teaching positions as historians at the City College of New York for their radical political views and their alledged political indoctrination of their students. The collection includes correspondence, including letters and memoranda from John Haynes Holmes, head of the ACU to Frederick R. Joudert, Jr., co-chair of the so-called Rapp-Coudert Committee, i.e. the New York State Legislature's Joint Legislative committee to Investigate the Educational System of the State of New York, legal documents and letters in support of the Foners, Committee statements, student protest printed ephemera in support of the Foner brothers, a report, "Summary of Evidence against Individuals Now In the Educational Systems [of New York City, 157 pp.]," and a statement by Max Yergan on his non re-appointment as lecturer in Negro history at City College.
