Historical/Biographical Note
Wel-Met Camps, which had divisions in Narrowsburg, Barryville and Silver Lake in Sullivan County, was founded as the Metropolitan Jewish Centers Camp Association in May 1935, and the name may have stood for Welfare Metropolitan. The camp association merged with Goddard-Riverside Community Center, and the camps began to be phased out in the 1970's. Goddard-Riverside, after changing the format, stopped its Wel-Met camping altogether in 1997. A separate Camp Welmet is run in Putnam County by the Mosholu Montefiore Community Center in the Bronx.
