Scope and Contents
This series contains material related to the personal life of Esther Cooper Jackson. Ephemera from her high school and college experiences during the 1930s and 1940s are in this series. Correspondence with Black American progressives, historians and other researchers include Paul Robeson biographer Martin Duberman, Lloyd Brown, Dorothy and Margaret Ann Burnham, Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee, Virginia Durr, Shirley Graham Du Bois, Pete Seeger, and Alice Walker. This series also contains her writings including her 1940 M.A. thesis Negro Women Domestic Workers in Relation to Trade Unionism. Interview transcripts and papers describing to her life and work date from the 1990s to the 2010s. Programs, publicity material, and ephemera associated with to her numerous awards and appearances are also in this series, specifically her 2003 honorary doctorate from the Brooklyn Campus of Long Island University. This series also includes photographs of Esther at events, with husband James, and with notable community members including W.E.B. Du Bois, Ossie Davis, Ruby Dee, and Ollie Harrington. The 1953 booklet, This is My Husband, in which Esther emphasizes James' humanity, patriotism, and wartime service while he is pursued by the United States government under the Smith Act.
