Abstract
Herman Singer (1915-2001) was an editor of the New Leader from 1945-1950. He worked for Radio Free Europe (RFE) and collected documents relating to his work on Calverton, Socialist Party history, NY Call/SDF, the Newspaper Guild-Free Europe Unit, and Free Europe Guild News. He corresponded regularly with Bob Rindel, Sam Solon, Tom Berger, Calverton and other editors and publishers.
Biographical Note
Herman Singer (1915-2001) was an editor of the New Leader from 1945-1950. He worked for Radio Free Europe (RFE) and was active in their alumni organization, the Society of International Broadcasters. He edited the publication East Europe in the 1960s and 1970s wrote on V. F. Calverton, proletarian literature and Socialist Party history, and reviewed books and films.
Scope and Contents
This collection contains correspondence and documents relating to his work on Calverton, Socialist Party history, NY Call/SDF, the Newspaper Guild-Free Europe Unit, and Free Europe Guild News. Also included is correspondence with Bob Rindel, Sam Solon, Calverton and various editors and publishers. Accretion 2019 contains documents and clippings from his work within The Call and his correspondence with Tom Berger.

Immediate Source of Acquisition
Materials donated by Judith Singer Sam in 2002 and 2005. Judith Singer Sam sent a gift of four cartons of the papers of Herman Singer containing materials related to his literary career and political activities, and his work for Radio Free Europe in 2002. Singer Sam also send materials related to Bob Rindl, Sam Solon, and Calverton in 2005. The accession number associated with these gifts are 2002.016. An additional accession was donated in January 2019 by Judy Sam. The accession number associated with this accretion is 2019.045.
Physical Characteristics and Technical Requirements
Papers in this collection are very brittle and in fragile condition. Researchers should handle with care or supervision of an archivist.

Processing Information
This collection was re-housed in 2015. Materials have been kept in their original order, but one additional box has been added to provide additional space for these items. In 2019 accretion materials were placed in new acid-free folders and boxes. Original caption information, when available, was transcribed onto folders.
