Abstract

Seven architectural drawings, dated 1896-1926, from the collection of investor and philanthropist Peter W. May.

Biographical / Historical

Peter William May is a New York-born investor and philanthropist. He is president and a founding partner of Trian Fund Management. May began collecting architectural drawings and models in 1987, and in 2021 published a two-volume catalog, "Living With Architecture As Art: The Peter W. May Collection of Architectural Drawings, Models, and Artefacts" edited by Maureen Cassidy-Geiger.

The drawings are arranged chronologically.

Scope and Contents

This collection consists of 7 architectural drawings, dated 1896-1926, from the collection of investor and philanthropist Peter W. May. These include 3 drawings of an art gallery, submitted to the New Zealand Institute of Architects by Reginald Harold Uren (New Zealander, 1903-1988) in 1926; 3 drawings for an auction house by an unknown architect, circa 1900; and 1 drawing of the reception room of the Royal Pavilion, Brighton, UK, by the firm of James Plucknett and Co., 1896. The drawings are all pencil, watercolor, and ink on paper, and they are marked with May's collection numbers on the verso.
