Abstract

A collection of photographs and printed ephemera that focuses on Carol and Marvin Kasper, two children living in Stuyvesant Town in the late 1940s and early 1950s. The collection covers their leisure activities (Stuyvesant Town Spring Festival, costume parade and contest, playground, Carol's participation in dance classes) and their school life at Public School 50 on East 20th Street.

Biographical / Historical

Stuyvesant Town is a large residential development on the East Side of Manhattan between 14th Street and 20th Street and First Avenue and Avenue C. Construction on the complex started in 1942, but the first building did not open until 1947.

Irving and Anne Kasper and their children, Marvin and Carol, moved from Brooklyn to Stuyvesant Town in the late 1940s. The photographs in this collection were taken not long after the opening of Stuyvesant Town. Carol Hannan (née Kasper) compiled this collection.

Arrangement

The collection is organized by subject matter.

Scope and Contents

This collection consists of candid photographs and assorted ephemera that document the life of the Kasper children, Carol and Marvin, in the early days of Stuyvesant Town. Activities covered included the 1949 Stuyvesant Town Spring Festival, a Stuyvesant Town costume parade and contest in 1950, free time on the playground, and street shots in front of a nearby shoe store. The collection also includes photographs and ephemera from the children's local school, P.S. 50 on East 20th Street, and Carol Kasper's dance school, Town and Village School of the Dance on First Avenue. Finally, the collection includes a photograph of Marvin Kasper that was used in an underwear advertisment in The New York Daily News.
