Abstract

A collection of 96 silver gelatin photographs taken by Willis L. Bott between 1944 and 1958 that document both rural scenery and urban infrastructure in New York counties including Dutchess, Rockland, Putnam, Westchester, and the Bronx.

Biographical / Historical

Willis L. Bott was born in Union City, NJ on June 22, 1908 and raised in Philmont, NY. He worked on the New York Central Railroad in Columbia County, NY and put himself through the chemistry program at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY. After graduation he spent his career with the Davis Emergency Equipment Company in Newark, NJ. He married D. Margaret Jansson in 1937. They had four sons and raised them in Teaneck, NJ, where he lived until his death in 1978.

Bott was an avid photographer and often had his camera with him, capturing scenes and activities. He processed the negatives and printed the photos in a darkroom he set up in his basement. His photographs document life in the period between 1940 and 1960, and many images capture the beauty he saw in nature. His photographs are held by the New Jersey Historical Society, the Teaneck and Bogota, NJ public libraries, the Bergen County Historical Society Library, the Columbia County (NY) Historical Society, the Appalachian Trail Museum, the Office of Development and Special Projects of the Bear Mountain and Harriman State Parks (Palisades Interstate Park Commission), the New-York Historical Society, and the Historical Society of Pennsylvania.

Folder 1 focuses on Rockland, Dutchess, and Putnam Counties. The earliest photographs from 1944 depict scenery in Spring Valley, Suffern, and Orangeburg, NY, including shots of the Hudson River. A series of shots from February 1946 show the Hudson River in snow from the Bear Mountain Bridge and the snowy landscape around Garrison, Beacon, and Cold Spring, NY. Photographs taken in October 1946 show scenery near Stony Point and Jones Point, NY, including the entrance to Stony Point State Park, boats on the Hudson River, and the Stony Point World War II memorial. Photographs from 1947 and 1948 include various shots of the Bear Mountain Bridge, High Tor, Anthony's Nose, Mt. Beacon, and scenery near Cold Spring, Garrison, Fishkill, and West Point, NY. Photographs from 1950 to 1955 show farmland, pastures, Hudson River views, a church and railroad stations, and other scenery near Pine Plains, Wassaic, Wingdale, Bear Mountain, Webutuck, and Pawling, NY.
