Abstract
The McKim, Mead and White Architectural Collections consists of architectural drawings, correspondence, photographs, scrapbooks, financial records, and specifications documenting individual projects of the firm as well as its overall operations.
Biographical / Historical
Charles McKim (1847–1909), William Rutherford Mead (1846–1928), and Stanford White (1853–1906) established their partnership in New York City in 1879 and soon became the premier architectural firm in the United States. Between 1879 and 1912, the firm received nearly 1000 commissions, designing a wide array of residential, institutional, commercial, and public buildings in New York and other cities. Influenced by their extensive travels (and training) in Europe, the firm designed primarily in the Beaux Arts style, becoming the leading proponents of a return to classicism as an expression of American architectural character. The firm's work at the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893, featuring the "White City," also helped to launch the "City Beautiful" movement.
Among the firm's many notable buildings are Pennsylvania Station (1910, razed 1963), the Morgan Library and Museum (1903, expanded 1928), the Brooklyn Museum (1895), and the Municipal Building (1909-1915).
While associated primarily with the Gilded Age, the firm continued for more than three decades after the death of the last founding partner (Mead) in 1928, and trained many significant 20th century architects, including John Carrere and Thomas Hastings.
Arrangement
The collection is currently organized by format into the following eight series:
Series I: Architectural drawings
Series II: Correspondence
Series III: Specifications
Series IV: Photographs
Series V: Scrapbooks and photograph albums
Series VI: Newspaper and journal clippings
Series VII: Financial records books
Series VIII: Publications
Scope and Contents
The McKim, Mead and White Architectural Record Collection spans the period from ca. 1875 to 1950 and includes the major portion of the firm's records. The collection consists of more than 61,000 architectural drawings, including ink on linen, blueprints, and other media; 1,500 photographs, including prints and glass and film negatives; 700 boxes of correspondence and specifications; 54 ledgers, including 17 bill books (1878-1947), 10 cash books (1894-1944), 8 contract books (1903-1930), and 9 journals (1882-1942); 30 photo albums and scrapbooks; and more than 300 original line drawings made to illustrate A Monograph of the Works of McKim, Mead and White, 1879-1915 (all numbers are approximate). The material contains extensive documentation of the firm's operations and of individual buildings, although most information about the firm's early years can be found in the photograph albums, clippings scrapbooks, and financial ledgers.
Included in the collection are Shingle Style, Colonial Revival, and other country houses in Newport, Rhode Island; urban residences such as the Villard Houses, New York; public commissions including Boston Public Library, Rhode Island State Capitol, and Prospect Park entrances, Brooklyn, New York; and universities, museums and libraries including the restoration of the University of Virginia rotunda, Columbia University and Pierpont Morgan Library, New York.
The collection is organized by the following formats: architectural drawings, correspondence, specifications, photographs, scrapbooks and photograph albums, newspaper and journal clippings, financial records, and publications.
More detailed finding aids for portions of the collection are available on-site. Researchers wishing to access the collection must schedule an appointment in advance. Series I: Architectural Drawings
Conditions Governing Use
Researchers wishing to access architectural drawings should be aware that due to their fragility and volume, special handling procedures apply to these materials. Accordingly, researchers should consult with the Print Room Librarian about how much time to budget when scheduling an appointment to view architectural drawings. The majority of drawings are stored on rolls; unrolling and rerolling these drawings is a time consuming process, so only a limited number of rolls can be viewed per visit. Multiple visits will be required for researchers wishing to view a significant number of drawings.
To preserve drawings for future research, the following restrictions apply:
1. All research appointments must be scheduled in advance through the Print Room Librarian.
2. Researchers will be required to wash their hands at the institution prior to handling archival materials.
3. Librarians will page only one tube or folder of architectural drawings at a time. No additional materials will be paged until all previously accessed drawings have been re-rolled and/or re-housed.
4. No drawings will be paged after 2:00 PM (or within one hour of closing time).
5. The Librarian has the discretion to limit the number of rolls a researcher may view per visit.
6. Damaged or particularly fragile drawings may, in the Librarian's discretion, be handled only under the direct supervision of a librarian or withheld pending review by the chief conservator.
Subseries I.1: Rolled drawings
Scope and Contents
Included in this series are approximately 61,150 rolled drawings for over 1000 commissioned projects. Approximately 65 percent of these are tracings (mostly ink on linen), and 35 percent are print duplicates (mostly blueprints on paper). They consist of plans, elevations, sections, exterior and interior details, full size details, sketches, and shop drawings. Projects include educational institutions, banks, country estates, residences, clubs and casinos, hotels, memorials, government buildings, public buildings, commercial buildings, libraries, museums, churches, and hospitals in New York and elsewhere.
The drawings were re-housed between 2009-2012 pursuant to a generous Save America's Treasures grant from the National Park Service, in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Institute of Library and Museum Services, and the President's Committee on the Arts and Humanities.
This subseries includes drawings of many of the firm's most important projects in New York City and elsewhere. An item-level inventory of the rolled drawings is available on-site.

Series II: Correspondence
Scope and Contents
This series consists of approximately 665 hollinger boxes of documents -- primarily letters, but also a large amount of billing correspondence and some contracts. The files also occasionally include small drawings, rough sketches, specifications, photographs and clippings. A small amount of additional correspondence may be located in Series III, Specifications.
Processing Information
The correspondence files have been partially processed. In 2004, the original folders were rehoused into 665 document boxes. Over time some of these original folders, which are crumbling, were replaced with archival folders, but most of the series remains in the original folders.
Also in 2004, an inventory of the correspondence was prepared as a standalone Microsoft Word document. In 2020, reference librarian Jill Reichenbach transcribed the inventory into ArchivesSpace, incorporating it into this on-line finding aid.

Series IV: Photographs, circa 1880s-1960s, inclusive
Scope and Contents
The Photographs series includes copy photos of architectural drawings, glass plate negatives, printed material (offprints from publications, entire publications, postcards), newspaper clippings, documents from Departments of Documents and Buildings (generally for New York City projects), handwritten notes, and sometimes correspondence or blueprints. (This series does not include photo albums; see Series V for those, along with scrapbooks.)
All folders contain photographs unless otherwise specified. For projects that have multiple folders of material, general descriptions of what is in each folder have been given. Projects that merely have a listing of their name are represented by a folder of photographs only.
Sometimes images of other buildings may appear in a specific project's file. These were found with the other photographs in the file, and often cases have manuscript notations on them to "file in [project name]". They were most likely used as models for buildings, or contained elements or ideas that were to be incorporated into the project in question.
Photographers included are Blackman Photo Service, Edwin J. Cardswell, Louis H. Dreyer, Gottscho-Schleisner, H. Ernest King, Schuyler Carteret Lee, J.C. Maugans, C. Ording, Richard Averill Smith, Adolph Studly, Tebbs Architectural Photos, Irving Underhill, United States Army Signal Corps, DeWitt Ward, and Wurts Bros.
Arrangement
The files of photographic prints and any related materials are housed and organized by size, and arranged in alphabetical order within each size. These are followed by a set of glass plate negatives. Because of this size-oriented arrangement, a particular subject can be found in more than one subseries.
Subseries IV.A. Small Photographs
Subseries IV.B. Medium Photographs
Subseries IV.C. Large Photographs
Subseries IV.D. Glass Negatives
Processing Information
Subseries IV.A and IV.B (small and medium photographs) were processed by Cailean Cooney and by Kristine Paulus, respectively, in 2004-2006. Photos were housed and an inventory prepared at that time in a Word document. In April-May 2020, reference librarian Jill Reichenbach transcribed the inventory into N-YHS's collection management system and re-published the on-line finding aid to include the full subseries IV.A and IV.B list.
Subseries IV.C (large photographs) was processed and inventoried sometime after 2006, likely around 2009-12 when the bulk of the collection was processed. Subseries IV.D. (glass negatives) were rehoused, likely also around 2009-12, but have not been inventoried.
Subseries IV.A: Small Photographs, 1885-1956 (bulk, undated), inclusive
Scope and Contents
This subseries includes photograph files housed upright in 42 document boxes. The majority of these photographs are 8 x 10, but they also include small snapshots.

Subseries IV.D: Glass Negatives
Scope and Contents
This subseries includes approximately 600 8 x 10 inch glass negatives. There is no inventory of these.
Series V: Scrapbooks and photograph albums
Scope and Contents
This series includes 30 blank-paged leather-bound volumes with photographs, maps, sketches, and/or floor plans pasted in. Some of the albums have been disbound and re-housed in folders due to their deteriorating condition. Most albums depict MMW projects and are devoted to either a particular project or a general category of work. There are also a few albums of non-MMW work which probably served as sourcebooks for the firm's architects to draw ideas from.
Detailed inventories for some of the scrapbooks are available on-site.
Photograph scrapbook, New York University, 1898
Scope and Contents
Scrapbook contains maps, sketches, and photographs of building exteriors, fields, barns, dormitories, the library, Havemeyer Chemical Laboratory, staircases, general construction, and the Hall of Languages in University Heights. 1898.
Clippings scrapbook (mainly non-MM&W Beaux-Arts competitions), undated
Scope and Contents
This album does not appear to contain the work of MM&W. Instead, the majority of photographs and sketches concern themselves with various Beaux-Arts Architects and competitions. There are several decorative elements at the beginning of the book.
Scrapbook of MM&W Commissions, 1870-1888, 1870-1888
Scope and Contents
Comprehensive collection of plans, photographs, designs and articles relating to McKim, Mead and White commissions. There are several unidentified buildings. Articles pertain to the building, construction, and controversy (such as the trustees of the Boston Public Library choosing McKim, Mead and White over the Boston city architect).
