Presentation case holding insignia of the First Class Order of the Sacred Treasure presented to George Champion in 1969. The Order of the Sacred Treasure is a Japanese order established in 1888 by the Emperor Meiji. Originally awarded in eight classes (eighth being the lowest; first, the highest), the order is given to recipients—Japanese and international alike—in recognition of their outstanding public service in the fields of education, social welfare, medical care, and commissioned governmental work. Champion received the honor for his "meritorious services . . . rendered to Japan and . . . many contributions to [its] post-war economic and industrial development . . . and for the . . . promotion of Japanese-American friendship." The first class insignia consists of a ribbon or sash, a badge, and a lapel pin. Although photographs taken during the presentation show the lapel pin being affixed to Champion's suit, it is not present in the collection. Nor is the certificate mentioned in the ceremony program. [See documentation (Box 1, Folder 4) and photographs (Box 2, Folder 10), as well as en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Order_of_the_Sacred_Treasure.]
